چکیده

Extraintestinal manifestations (EIM) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are frequent and may occur before or after IBD diagnosis. EIM may impact the quality of life for patients with IBD significantly requiring specific treatment depending on the affected organ(s). They most frequently affect joints, skin, or eyes, but can also less frequently involve other organs such as liver, lungs, or pancreas. Certain EIM, such as peripheral arthritis, oral aphthous ulcers, episcleritis, or erythema nodosum, are frequently associated with active intestinal inflammation and usually improve by treatment of the intestinal activity. Other EIM, such as uveitis or ankylosing spondylitis, usually occur independent of intestinal inflammatory activity. For other not so rare EIM, such as pyoderma gangrenosum and primary sclerosing cholangitis, the association with the activity of the underlying IBD is unclear. Successful therapy of EIM is essential for improving quality of life of patients with IBD. Besides other options, tumor necrosis factor antibody therapy is an important therapy for EIM in patients with IBD. (Inflamm Bowel Dis 2015;21:1982–1992)

Anti-TNF alpha therapy in the management of extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are immune-mediated disorders of unknown etiology that primarily affect the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, other organ systems can be involved such as joint/bones, skin, eyes, hepatobiliary tract, lungs and kidney. Overall, they represent extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease and may present before,...

Beyond the Bowel: Extraintestinal Manifestations of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, relapsing immune-mediated inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. IBD includes two major disease entities: Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis. Imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis and surveillance of these complex disorders. Computed tomographic and magnetic resonance enterographic techniques have been refined in recent years to p...

Patient awareness of extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease.

INTRODUCTION Patient awareness of extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel diseases is important in improving patient understanding of their disease and health outcomes. We aim to characterize patient awareness of extraintestinal complications related to their disease. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was administered from July 2011 to May 2012. All adult (>18 years) IBD patients ...

Pulmonary abnormalities in inflammatory bowel disease.

Extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a common clinical problem affecting up to half of all IBD patients; pulmonary disease, however, ranks among less common extraintestinal manifestations of IBD. Pulmonary disease in patients with IBD is most frequently drug induced due to treatment with sulfasalazine or mesalamine leading to eosinophilic pneumonia and fibrosing...

Erythema nodosum as a presentation of inflammatory bowel disease.

T case was notable because the initial presentation of Crohn’s disease consisted only of extraintestinal manifestations. This is uncommon, and the vast majority of children will present with the typical combination of abdominal pain, diarrhea and weight loss with or without extraintestinal manifestations (Box 1). Extraintestinal manifestations occur in about 25%–35% of cases of inflammatory bow...

Extraintestinal Manifestations Associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects multiple organ systems outside of the gastrointestinal tract. The clinician treating patients with IBD should be acutely aware of the diagnosis and treatment of extraintestinal manifestations in order to decrease morbidity. The management can be difficult and often times requires a multidisciplinary approach. Future research investigating the pathophysio...
